Regiekommentar

Despite my long-lasting relationship with the band, it took me a while to see behind the surface of Moderat well-rehearsed image of the Berlin supergroup. To somebody like me, coming from a feminist background, it seemed that the idea of gender roles in the music business was quite retrograde: men perform in the forefront, while women, most of the time, assist behind the scenes.

Only when I went on tour with the band for a couple of concerts, my image of the group start to change. An all-men crew on tour is one of the most intense examples of male friendship. It’s a web of relationships that has so many more facets and is much more complex than I expected. It fascinated and surprised me. And so it happened that I ended up making a movie about male friendship at a moment in which women in movies were the most exciting subject of discussion.

This documentary about Moderat has as much to say about the artists‘ music and their way of working. But more than that, it’s about what kind of men they are. What they want and what they fear. What they already understood and what they are still struggling to cope with. The image they created for themselves allows them to climb mountains but also confines them like a straight jacket. Observing them in their strength and weakness, in their hopes and doubts, in their explosion of power and unexpected moments of tenderness has been challenging but also a fascinating insight into the world of modern men.
