Salvo, erfahrener Fischer, praktiziert auf den 30 Meter hohen Klippen der Insel Gozo eine uralte Fischereimethode. Er lässt seine Reuse in die Tiefen des Mittelmeers hinab und erzählt, begleitet vom Klagelied des Meeres, von drastischen Veränderungen, Verlust sowie dem empfindlichen Gleichgewicht der Natur.

In Baħar Biss Salvo, a seasoned fisherman tells a melancholic tale of the sea and the irreparable loss of life beneath its waves, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the towering island cliffs of Gozo, Malta.

»Bahar Biss is about loss- the loss of the environment we live in. When I first started out with this project, I did want to make a film about loss, but it was the loss of my father who used to live in Malta. When he died 4 years ago I went back for two weeks after the funeral. I needed to escape fall, grey Berlin. I went running everyday along the cliffs to cope. While I was running I came across these fishermen who sat there suicidally close to the 50m high edge, looking out at sea with the low November sun hanging in the sky, waiting patiently for the fish. Something about their grounded, patient focus, the slow pace of fishing,their content resonated with me and I wanted to make a film about that. My father also loved fishing. Though his absence remains unspoken in the film, it whispers through the film's quiet moments and resonates in the soulful verses of the Maltese Ghana song from Manwel Mercieca:“Where is my voice of old?Where is it? Where? Where did it go? Wherever it is bring it back,because I think the wind has taken it away.«

Franziska von Stenglin
*1984 in München, ist Künstlerin und Filmemacherin. Sie wuchs in der Tschechischen Republik, im Senegal, in Indien und Deutschland auf. In ihrer Arbeit verknüpft sie biographische Aspekte mit lokalen Mythen, Menschen und deren Geschichten.
